Laboratory Decision Welcome

21 March 2007

The New Zealand Nurses Organisation welcomes the outcome of the judicial review regarding Auckland community laboratory services.

NZNO has consistently opposed the Auckland Regional DHBs’ decision to award the contract to Labtests Auckland Ltd. Of particular concern was the lack of consultation with the public and health professionals affected and reduction of community services.

The process has been unnerving for NZNO members working at Diagnostic Medlab, some have even considered a career change over taking employment at Labtests. Over 100 NZNO members have a collective employment agreement with Diagnostic Medlab. It is believed that the terms and conditions of that agreement would not be matched by the individual agreements offered by Labtests.

It is now vital that the three Auckland DHBs ensure the Auckland community is provided with the quality laboratory services it requires and deserves. “The DHBs need to take a long hard look at themselves,” says NZNO Organiser Christine Gallagher. “The flaws in the process go far beyond conflicts of interest. The arrogance displayed by our public health providers flying in the face of every community and professional organisation affected by their decision must cease immediately.”

“Even if they are unrepentant, public consultation will be forced upon DHBs this year at election time. Aucklanders will no doubt want to have their say,” Ms Gallagher added.
