Committee Profiles

Carol Fisher (Membership)

I have lived in rural northland for the past 20years with my husband. We have 2 children and 3 grandsons. Over this time my nursing career has focused on caring for the elderly both in hospital and community settings. I have been involved withour local Te Tai Tokerau Gerontology Section since it's inception. My current position with Northland District Healthboard is Community Gerontology Nurse. I am responsible for monitoring the health of older adults who are living in the community assisting and supporting them to maintain there independance.

Gillianne Meek (Committee Member)

I'm Gillianne Meek, Associate Director of Nursing at Lakes District Health Board. I trained in the UK and have been in New Zealand for almost 5 years, starting off as an RN int he Rehabilitation ward and later as the Rehabilitation Nurse Specialist at Rotorua Public Hospital. I have a passion for working with the elderly and hold an Honours degree specifically in Nursing - Older people. I have served on the Gerontology Section Committee since 2004.

Sally Fleming (Treasurer)

I have worked with older people in either the public or residential system for 20 years now.
Currently my role is in Quality Management, previous to that I managed a Rest Home and before that I was a Registered Nurse in residential care. So I have sort of grown with the establishment changing roles as I gained more experience. I am committed to Gerontology nursing. I do believe that there is any other speciality, which can provide such a wide variety of medical conditions and nursing issues. Long term residential care in particular, gives nurses the opportunity to be holistic and proactive, to really get to know people, to care for them as individuals and make a difference.

Margaret Stevenson (Secretary)

I am a Registered Nurse with over 30 years experience. I have worked in Medical Nursing for many years and for last six years have been in the private aged care sector working as a clinical nurse manager. I have been an active committee member of the Otago Gerontology Section for a number of years. I find working in the older persons health area rewarding and challenging I believe that nurses working in the aged care sector can make the well-being of their residents of a high quality by using their nursing knowledge to ensure that all their physical, emotional and other needs are met. The satisfaction of seeing older people looking happy and contented in their environment gives great job satisfaction.
