Information for registered nurses seeking authorisation to prescribe in diabetes health
Please circulate this information to nurses who are preparing to apply for diabetes registered nurse prescribing rights as part of the Health Workforce New Zealand Priority 2014.
The Council will start accepting applications for prescribing authorisation from nurses working in diabetes health, as soon as a required PHARMAC consultation and decision on the extension of subsidies has been completed. This is expected to be completed in May or June.
Information on the authorisation process, the practicum and supervision requirements can be found on the Nursing Council website. http://nursingcouncil.org.nz/Nurses/Authorisation Please note: that there are changes to these guidelines and the evidence that nurses are required to submit in their application.
The Council is continuing to develop a proposal for broader registered nurse prescribing and nurses who gain authority to prescribe in diabetes health should be aware that in the future a higher qualification (a post graduate diploma) is likely to be required for broader prescribing rights.
