Benefits of Joining the Perioperative Nurses College for for Medical Imaging Nurses

Since 1985 medical imaging nurses have been meeting yearly at national conference. However, due to financial demands and a lack of infrastructure there was limited opportunity to grow the Medical Imaging Nurses New Zealand (MINNZ) network.

MINNZ nurses can now join the Perioperative Nurse College (PNC) with the benefits of having:

  • a medical imaging voice within NZNO, New Zealand’s largest nursing network supporting over 42,000 nurses and health workers.
  • key MINNZ positions within the PNC structures to ensure that medical imaging nurses are represented nationally and regionally (link to the contact page).
  • access to web-based information through the MINNZ link on the PNC website.
  • quarterly issues of The Dissector with 2 dedicated medical imaging pages (link to The Dissector page)
  • access to NZNO and PNC grants and scholarships, whilst retaining MINNZ awards (link to awards)
  • concurrent medical imaging sessions and time set aside for MINNZ nurses to hold their own meeting at PNC Conferences

To join the PNC print off the membership form and send $11.25 to the PNC secretary.

History of MINNZ Nurses

Cardiology and Radiology Interventional and Special Procedures (CRISP) Nurses NZ, with the new and recently renamed Medical Imaging Nurses New Zealand (MINNZ) is a national body set up to help bring nurses working in the Cardiac Catheter Lab and Interventional Radiology field together and facilitate sharing of information and experience.

The inaugural meeting was held in 1985 and the founding members were Linda Robert (Managing Director, OBEX), nurses Debbie Booth, June Carpenter, and Jenny Smith.

For many years OBEX organised the annual CRISP conference, which enabled nurses working in radiology departments and cardiac cath labs to meet annually. They were able to spend valuable time networking and sharing specialised knowledge and ideas.

Eventually Radiology and Cardiac Catheter Lab Nurses managed this responsibility and each year a different area of New Zealand hosted the conference. However, OBEX continued to be a major part of the CRISP conference.

Due to CRISP nurses re-assessing their current practice and roles, foreseeing the many advantages of being part of a larger professional nursing college group, and the fact that the current nature of radiology nursing is becoming more closely related to peri-operative nursing, the decision was made to change our name to MINNZ and join our colleagues in the Perioperative Nurses College (NZNO).

The 25th and final CRISP conference was held in Invercargill in October, 2009.

Conference Planning for MINNZ nurses at the PNC Conference

Joining the PNC conference is a significant milestone for MINNZ nurses and it is important that we can attract as many MINNZ nurses as possible.

Traditionally MINNZ nurses have been slow at registering for conferences and expressing interest in presenting papers.  This year we will not have the option of leaving things to the last minute.  With over 300 delegates likely to attend, over 50 trade stands, along with international and national keynote speakers there is a lot of planning involved.  Adhering to deadlines is important.  Abstracts to be submitted by TBC.  Information to follow.

Many thanks to the Central North Island PNC conference committee who are juggling their programme so that concurrent sessions are allocated for MINNZ nurses to retain the Debbie Booth Memorial Travel Award.  (There will be 6 MINNZ presentations, 15 minute duration).  MINNZ presentations will be in a breakout room, i.e. not in the main auditorium.

In 2010, OBEX is funding $1500 for the Debbie Booth Memorial Travel award, and Boston Scientific is funding $250 for the runner-up award.

The conference registration cost is not finalised yet, however it will not be more than $475.  To attract as many MINNZ nurses as possible there is increased funding this year from the Ann Chatterton Trust Fund.  North Island nurses are eligible for $300 and South Island nurses are eligible for $400.  Funding will be granted on a first come first serve basis.  Request for funding will be accepted from the TBC.  MINNZ nurses are expected to apply for their work place education funds before applying to the Ann Chatterton Trust Fund.

Request for funding is to be in writing to Doryan Mahalm, Radiologoy CNM, Christchurch Hospital, Riccarton Avenue, Private Bag 4710, Christchurch.  Email:  doryan.mahalm@cdhb.govt.nz

Start talking amongst your colleagues on how many staff will be attending conference.  Start thinking about a topic to present.  Start thinking about accessing workplace education funds.

The June issue of The Dissector will have further information on the PNC conference.  Also keep checking the PNC website (www.pnc.org.nz) on the conference link.

Awards

Every year at the PNC annual general meeting many awards are presented.  All PNC members are eligible to apply for any of the awards.  Traditionally there is only ever a few applications.  It would be such a shame to loose these awards because of a lack of interest.  Click on the link to the awards to find out more information.

Medical Imaging Nurses Paper
