FPR 333: Nursing the Person with Diabetes

This is a specialised nursing paper that has been developed together with the MidCentralHealth Diabetes Lifestyle Centre.

The lecturers are specialist practitioners in Diabetes, and include nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, a podiatrist, a dietician, and a pharmacist.

The topics are orientated towards assisting the client with diabetes in managing their diabetes lifestyle.

The paper enables Registered Nurses to develop aspects of Professional Practice relevant to assisting people with Diabetes to ensure that people with diabetes gain a full understanding of the diabetes management needs and achieve good control of their condition.

This paper is an integral part of the Registered Nurse to Bachelor of Nursing program at UCOL Palmerston North but you are able to enrol in it as a standalone paper.

GCMD700: Managing and Caring for People with Diabetes in the Clinical and Community Setting

The aim of this course is to provide opportunities for Registered Nurses to extend their knowledge and skills in the care and management of people with diabetes and to integrate their knowledge to nursing practice.

It is offered by Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology (CPIT).

This course will enable students to reflect upon and critique their nursing practice in line with guidelines for best practice, and in relationship to national and international research on diabetes.

This level 8, 30 credit practice module may be taken as part of the Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing, Masters of Nursing or as a standalone module.

This module was designed and developed in collaboration with the National Diabetes Education Framework Group to support Level 3, Proficient diabetes nurse competencies for nurses specialising in diabetes.

The aim of this module is for you to:

Demonstrate advanced nursing knowledge in client assessment, care planning, continuing care and management plan, evaluation and referrals in diabetes care in partnership with patients and their families and communities.

Critically examine pathophysiology and advances in diabetes diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.

Develop educational strategies with clients, families/whanau and communities promoting self management of diabetes and healthy lifestyle.

Critically analyse research evidence and inquiry methods for advanced diabetes nursing practice and lifestyle education.

Critically examine legal, ethical and professional responsibilities in advanced diabetes nursing practice.
