About us

Aims of the National Gerontology Section:

  • Be the recognised professional organisation for all gerontology nurses in New Zealand.
  • Foster common interests in gerontological nursing with those involved in care of older people.
  • Recruit practicing nurses identifying with and/or interested in gerontological care to belong to the national section.
  • Practice within the protection, partnership and participation principles of The Treaty of Waitangi.
  • Develop and disseminate standards of practice for gerontology nurses.
  • Encourage, promote and provide the development of educational programmes/seminars for gerontology nurses and those interested in gerontology care.
  • Encourage and support research into gerontological nursing issues.
  • Liaise with appropriate authorities on relevant social and health issues.
  • Actively facilitate the ongoing strategic and professional development of gerontological nurses in conjunction with the appropriate health authorities.
  • Act as an advocate in nursing, health and other related issues in the care of older people.
  • Provide a communications network for all members including regular newsletters, conferences and disseminating information on issues pertaining to gerontological nursing.
  • Promote gerontological nursing and increase the profile of gerontology nurses.
  • Communicate and liaise with other gerontology organisations at a national and international level.
  • Support the objectives and activities of the New Zealand Nurses Organisation.
