2011 Nurse Colposcopist Training Standards (PDF, 31 pages 368KB)
In 2007 the NZNO Women’s Health Section developed training standards to assist nurses develop their practice in colposcopy.
Nationally recognised standards are required to ensure that nurses are trained appropriately and consistently throughout New Zealand.
These standards were updated in 2011 (see contact details below).
There are two options to become a Nurse Colposcopist in New Zealand:
Option One: Registered Nurse (RN) who completes Nursing Council of New Zealand expanded practice competencies
The RN who wishes to perform colposcopy, needs to complete:
a. the expanded practice competencies (Nursing Council of New Zealand has information on these www.nursingcouncil.org.nz)
b. the standards for Nurse Colposcopist Training and Clinical Traning Programme recommendations (2011).
Option Two: Nurse Practitioner with colposcopy as part of area of practice
The Nurse Practitioner or Nurse Practitioner Candidate who wishes to include colposcopy as part of his/her practice, needs to complete these Standards for Nurse Colposcopist Training and Clinical Training Programme recommendations (2011).
This is in addition to achieving the Nurse Practitioner competencies.
To understand the differences between the Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner scopes of practice and competencies, go to www.nursingcouncil.org.nz, and search for “scopes of practice”, and/or ring the Nursing Council for advice.
