Eseta Finau

Eseta Finau has been a tireless, dedicated and committed nurse leader who has made it her mission to ensure that the voices of nurses is heard and represented in various health forums. Eseta has been a champion for Pacific nurses not only as a Nurse leader for Pacific nurses but also in her capacity as a Tongan leader. Eseta was instrumental in the establishment of the Pacific Nursing Section. Eseta was on the organising committee for the recent South Pacific Nurses Forum. Eseta brings her skills as a nurse, an academic, a mother, wife and passion about her community as well as her broad knowledge of the health sector. The Pacific Nursing Section endorses her nomination as a National Section/College Representative on Board of Directors.
Nominees statement
- I am currently employed at the Pasifika Medical Association (PMA), Otahuhu, and Auckland as Community Liaison for the Healthcare Heroes Project. I am also a board member of PMA, and Chairperson for the Pacific Professional Organisation based at PMA.
- I am the President of the Tongan Nurses Association of NZ. Currently, I am the National Treasure for the Pacific Nursing Section of NZNO
- I have been involved in organizing national and international Pacific nursing conferences: e.g. SPNF 2010, International Tongan Nurses Conference, Tonga 2010, PMA Conference, Tonga 2005, Samoa 2007, Cook Islands 2009, and alternate years in Auckland. I was the previous SIDS Co-ordinator with Pacific SIDS Prevention Program, University of Auckland – it involved training of ethnic specific SIDS educators about SIDS prevention to Pacific communities. Is currently the Project Manager for Tongan Nurses Association of NZ- a MOH workforce development project about promoting nursing as a career to Tongan communities nationally.

Position suitability
I have experience in Board membership, a professional nursing leader, and have been involved in community leadership training programs. I have represented the Pacific community in many professional committees. I am comfortable with representing multi cultural ethnic groups of the Pacific and mainstream New Zealand. I am passionate about our Pacific Nursing Associations and committed to voicing their nursing issues when opportunities arise.
Previous relevant experience
I am Board member of the Tongan Health Society, which started the Langimalie Health Centre, the first Tongan ethnic specific service in Auckland. A member of the Agencies for Nutrition Action (ANA) Strategic Council Group. Previously, I was a member of the ADHB Pacific Advisory Group, MOH HEHA Working group, Member of National Advisory Committee for Menz B, MOH, Member of the Tongan Health Society Hepatitis B screening and prevention project with the National Hepatitis B Screening Program, NZ. Community involvements includes: Tongan community Health Days, National Tongan Methodist’s Youth Expo, Mangere.
A Research Assistant, in the Review of Pacific Healthy Housing Project, and Evaluation of the Pacific Health Providers performances t with CBG Research group, Auckland. Researcher for Pathways to prevent Sexual Violence Project for Tongans in Auckland which was funded by MPIA
Carolyn Dobson
Nominated by New Zealand College of Primary Health Care Nurses (NZNO)
Carolyn is an effective member and Chair of our Policy and Communications standing committee. She is committed to improving professional nursing practice and is excellent at communicating this amongst other nurses and nursing groups. Her positioning in the South Island and her role as a community nurse leader will be an asset to the position of College and Section rep and allow full representation of C & S in NZ with Debbie Davies being in the North Island.

I am currently employed at Dunstan Hospital by Central Otago Health Services Ltd.
All facets of nursing, acute, medical/surgical/ private surgical, geriatric and psycho-geriatric, psych rehab, practice nursing, district nursing. Focus has been mainly rural as we have brought up our four boys in rural areas. Most often have been a senior registered nurse but was afternoon supervisor Waimate hospital for 1 year before going to Lake Alice to work for a year, (1988) )then worked in a private surgical hospital in Timaru, then 2 years at Dunstan hospital, 7 years as a Practice nurse in Alexandra and have held my current position as Charge Nurse of District Nursing at Dunstan hospital for 7 years.

Position Suitability
I have a wide range of experience at a clinical level and have learned a lot about processes and policies from a service management perspective. I know what nurses need to keep them valued and professionally safe to practice. I believe in keeping members informed of professional issues and have established good communication networks throughout the South Island in the primary health sector. I would be honoured to represent the South Island.

Jenny Kendall

The National Enrolled Nurse Section supports the nomination of Jenny Kendall as we believe she has the experience, knowledge and skills to represent the Sections and Colleges as their representative on the NZNO BOD. Jenny's extensive previous history within NZNO and its structures supports our nomination, along with her support of nurses in the wider nursing community.

I am currently employed at Wellington Hospital by Capital Coast District Health Board.
Enrolled Nurse full time rostered and rotating in the operative theatres since 1975. Am an accomplished EN on the PDRP program and am involved with quality projects which has involved writing draft policy and doing research.

Position suitability
I have been an active member of the Enrolled Nurse Section since its inception in the 1970s and a member of the Perioperative Nurses College over the years. I am a member of the Tongan Nurses Association and am actively involved with different Pacific Island nursing groups. As a long standing delegate at Wellington Hospital I meet with all levels of registered nurses and health care givers and work on everyone's behalf. No matter where you are on the nursing ladder I will be there to support and if necessary bat for you.

- I have served on the Board previously for a total of ten years.
- I have served on the National Committee for Enrolled Nurses in the past.
- I have championed for the voices of the nurses to be held through their sections and colleges by joining appropriate sections/ colleges.
- I have been active in promoting other ethnic groups of nurses to get organised and become part of or liaise with NZNO.
