Karen is an active and committee NZNO delegate with a wealth of clinical expertise well supported by post graduate education.  Karen is a critical thinker, able to think strategically, analyse discussion documents/ policies/ proposals and prepare well considered critique of proposals and will be a valuable asset to NMAC.

Nominees statement

I am currently employed at Waikato Hospital by Waikato District Health Board, Emergency Department.  I have forty years of clinical nursing experience.  Currently working as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in the Emergency Department.

Suitability for the role

I work with a large staff of 90+ nurses and interact with a large number of the public on a daily basis.  I'm an experienced Clinical Practitioner and have worked for the last 23 years in the Emergency Department, the last four as a Clinical Nurse Specialist.  I have extensive involvement in NZNO.

Previous relevant experience

Senior NZNO delegate actively involved in Midlands Regional Council.  I have contributed to the development of resources and standards in the workplace and in the setting up of the College of Emergency Nurses.  Also I have provided comment on consultation documents.

Carol Friend

Carol has been involved with NZNO for 20+ years, many of these as a delegate.  She served one and a half terms on the NMAC committee previously before resigning to travel overseas.  We support her to resume a position on NMAC as we believe she has the knowledge and experience to fulfil the role.

Nominees statement

I am currently employed at Whakatane Hospital as Duty Manager by Bay of Plenty District Health Board.  Responsible for staff management, bed management, clinical resource person, resus team level 6, public relations and TOW liaison.  Previously worked in maternity, medical, surgical and ICU/ HDU.

Qualifications

  • Hospital trained registered nurse, Taumaranui Hospital
  • BA in Social Sciences majoring in Nursing - graduated 1996, Massey University
  • Master Nursing, Clinical Focus - graduated 2004, Massey University
  • Numerous certificates in management, TOW, clinical assessment, adult teaching and communication

Suitability for the role

I have more than 30 years experience working in acute clinical areas.  This is augmented by holistic updated knowledge gained while completing university studies.  I feel that I am open minded, highly self motivated and work well in the team.  I would really appreciate the chance to share my knowledge and experience with nurses at all levels and in all areas.

Previous relevant experience

Have previously worked one and a half terms with the NZNOs NMAC team (2005-2008).  Gained extensive writing and language skills while completing bachelor and masters papers.  Also worked on team putting together our local hospital CCP and then PDRP programmes.  NZNO delegate for more than 20 years also co-convenor and vice president of Whakatane branch.
