Freed to care, Proud to nurse

100 years of New Zealand Nurses Organisation

NZNO has commissioned a centennial publication outlining its history over the past 10 decades: Freed to care, Proud to Nurse: 100 years of New Zealand Nurses Organisation.

Mary Ellen O’Connor is the author. Mary Ellen was previously involved in polytechnic education, where she played an active part in union affairs, including participation on the national executive of the tertiary teachers union.

She has written several books and articles for a variety of publications. Mary Ellen believes that documenting the history of the largest women’s professional association and union in New Zealand over a very turbulent century was a great opportunity. She hopes it will provide a valuable lens for both the organisation itself and wider readership.
