Collective agreements

The New Zealand Nurses Organisation (NZNO) is an 'organising union'.

This means we work together with our members to improve their lives by organising for strength, unity and power at work and within the wider community.

One of the features of unionism in the workplace is a collective approach around wages and employment conditions.

NZNO staff work with members to negotiate Collective Agreements (CAs) with employers which prescribe the rates of pay and working conditions of employment in the workplace.

Once a CA has been agreed, we work with members and their employer to ensure that the pay rates and working conditions are observed.

Through collective bargaining, and by lobbying governments with other members of the community, unions have won minimum standards for:

  • pay
  • hours of work
  • overtime
  • holiday pay

as well as health and safety regulations and human rights.

Major collective agreements (MECAs)

The two main collective agreements can be found on the relevant campaign pages:

Both documents include details of employment conditions, including salaries/pay scales and Professional Development requirements (PDRP).
