The New Zealand Nurses Organisation (NZNO) offers several sources of funding in the form of scholarships and grants.

NZNO administers the Nursing Education and Research Foundation (NERF) and the Gretta and Harry Hamblin Trust and other NZNO grants are available through our National and regional offices.

H251.02 British Commonwealth Nurses' War Memorial Fund Scholarship

Amount Available: $5000

Eligibility: New Zealand registered nurses who are NZ residents

Criteria/Comments:

  • To enhance the professions of nursing and midwifery through scholarships or by such other charitable purposes for the benefit of nurses (NZ residents).
  • To enable the recipient to study outside of NZ (Deed 1952).
  • The recipient will be expected to share the knowledge gained with the wider nursing population upon completion of the scholarship.

  • Each scholarship or grant has set criteria that govern the purpose of the individual award. Please read these summaries carefully before deciding on application.
  • To be eligible for any of these grants or scholarships applicants must be current financial members of NZNO on the closing date.
  • All applications must be on the correct and most up-to-date form with all required information included, and legible.
  • Applications must be received in NZNO Wellington, National Office by 4.00 PM on the closing date. 
  • The Tiriti o Waitangi is the founding document of New Zealand. The Nursing Education Research Foundation and the New Zealand Nurses Organisation acknowledge the great importance of this living document and all successful applicants are expected to respect and promote the equal standing of Tangata Whenua with non-Māori.
  • Applicants must be living in New Zealand.
  • Individual applicants will only be eligible for one grant per calendar year (with the exception of Emergency grants).
  • The selection committee does consider financial need and applicants are required to give some basic information concerning income and expenditure.

NERF Selection Committee

The NERF Selection Committee is a minimum of three members of the Board of Trustees, two of whom are NZNO representatives and a Māori nurse nominated by Te Runanga. The secretary sits on this committee as a non-voting member.
The decision of the NERF Trustees Grant Assessment Committee is final. Payment is made to successful applicants within six weeks of the closing date.

Research Grants

All research proposals are reviewed by a committee with a minimum of two members of the Nursing Research Section and one member of NERF Board of Trustees. At least one member of the committee is Māori. The Research Committee meet three times a year and make recommendations to the NERF Selection Committee who decide allocation.

Emergency Grants

Applications can be made at any time of the year. Eligible applicants will be paid within three weeks of receipt.
Emergency grants are reviewed by the Chair, the secretary of the NERF Board of Trustees and a Māori representative.

Up to $300.00 will be offered three times per year for Conference attendance (Ref: H212.06).

Canterbury Members’ Earthquake Relief Fund

About the fund:

The New Zealand Nurses Organisation has allocated $10,000 to support members suffering stress as a result of the recent Canterbury earthquakes. The fund will assist with payments for up to three counselling, professional supervision or psychotherapy sessions to a maximum cost of $375 (incl GST) per applicant. The fund shall remain open until all funds have been allocated or until 30 November 2011 whichever shall occur first.

Eligibility:

Members must be resident and working in the wider Christchurch area (60 Km radius). They must have been resident and working in the area defined during the major earthquake period of September 2010 to the present. Applicants shall have been financial members of NZNO since 1 September 2010.

Criteria:

The counsellor, professional supervisor or psychotherapist must have a recognised professional qualification. Travel costs to attend the sessions shall not be paid.

Process:

Applications must be presented on the appropriate application form, be legible and contain all requested information.
Applications may be received by post or email.

  • Applications will be processed within 10 working days of receipt.
  • The decision will be conveyed to the applicant by letter.
  • There are two methods of payment for successful application;on submission of receipts (clearly identifying the provider) for the sessions the applicant shall paid or the provider may submit invoices directly to NZNO for payment

NNCA Professional Development Grant

Closing Dates: 31 May and 31 August

Approx Amount Available:  Up to $6000

Eligibility:  applicant must be a full member of NNCA member for the past two years.

Criteria/Comments:

  • Courses, seminars, conferences or projects relating to neonatal nursing.
  • Priority will be given to nurses embarking on research or writing for a peer reveiwed journal.

NZ Flight Nurses Scholarship Fund

Closing Dates: Applications considered 3 times each year

Amount available: Approx $300 per application

Eligibility:

  • Flight Nurses must have been NZFNA members for at least 12 months and must be actively involved in Flight Nursing.
  • The scholarship will assist members with the costs of conferences, courses or post-graduate study.

Criteria/Comments:

  • Special consideration will be given to applicants doing Tertiary / Post-Grad papers in Aviation related matters, and those presenting at conferences.
  • Receipts and/or copies of study enrolment confirmation will be required before any funds are actually allocated.

Diabetes Nurse Specialist Section Grant

Eg Workshops, conferences, study days, seminars, post graduate study.

Closing Dates: 28 February, 31 July

Approx Amount Available: $6000 per annum shared among successful applicants. Maximum allocation per person of $750 for postgraduate study, conferences etc and a maximum of $100 for an accreditation application.

Eligibility:  Available to current financial members of NZNO who have been Diabetes Nurse Specialist Section members for at least two years.

Elly Lilly Nursing Research Award

Recognises and supports diabetes research in New Zealand by providing an award to a nurse working in Diabetes Mellitus.

Closing Dates: 31st  March 2012. The winner will be announced and the funds will be available in May 2012.


Approx Amount Available:  $10,000 stippend (may be shared among a number of successful proposals).

Eligibility: 

  • Available to current financial members of NZNO or the New Zealand Society for the Study of Diabetes (NZSSD)
  • Principle investigator must be an RN

Women’s Health Section Education Award

NZNO National Women's Health Section, provides funding for attendance at conferences, and educational activities.

NZGNS Education Fund

Application for the Gastroenterology Nursing Education/Travel Fund (PDF)

Purpose: To provide financial assistance for qualified nurses, attending conference within New Zealand or Overseas, relevant to Gastroenterology.

Conditions for Application:
The Applicant is:

  1. A qualified nurse in New Zealand
  2. A member of NZNO and the Gastroenterology nurses section
  3. Undertaking travel within a year of award being made
  4. Will complete a report and have it published in 'The Tube' once Conference attended

  2. Relevance of planned travel to practice
  3. Benefits of nursing service especially for Gastroenterology

Nurses for Children and Young People of Aotearoa NZNO Conference Scholarship

A scholarship is available for registered nurses working in the area of child/youth health, who wish to attend an international/national conference relating to child/youth health.

Criteria:

  • Applicants must be a current member of the NZNO and the NCYPA national section
  • Applicants are required to present to the committee an outline of       professional objectives for attending the conference, including why attending is pertinent to the area the applicant is currently working in and how it will benefit his/her client base
  • Agreement to present at the next NCYPA conference, and to provide a written report for the newsletter within three months of attending.
  • The Scholarship will be a sum of $1000.00 to be divided amongst eligible applicants at the committee’s discretion. If only one applicant, he/she will not necessarily receive full scholarship.

Timeline:

  • The applications for scholarships will be considered and voted on at each committee meeting.
  • There are three committee meetings per year.
  • The scholarship is cumulative within 1 financial year. The cumulative total scholarship is $1000 in each financial year from 1st of April to 31st of March.
  • Applicants will be notified of whether their request has been accepted or declined following the meeting, in writing.
  • Only Applicants meeting the above criteria will be reviewed.This process will be reviewed every three years.
