Sexual health nurse honoured

16 September 2015 Auckland sexual health nurse Sonya Temata was honoured for her service to nursing at an awards ceremony in Wellington last night.

NZNO president Marion Guy says, "It is hard to imagine a more deserving recipient for this award than Sonya Temata. Sonya has many years' experience in a diverse range of areas of health care and community, particularly in indigenous health in Australia and New Zealand."

Sonya has a strong client and family focus and ethos incorporating all aspects of the physical, emotional, cultural, spiritual, socio-economic dimensions of health and well-being. She has devoted over a decade of her life to volunteer and charity work including the Pacific Women's Refuge, Auckland City Mission, Alice Springs Women's Shelter and Friends of Fiji Cardiac Missionary Trip.

Sonya worked at the Alice Springs Hospital, Northern Territory, Australia for a year. She spent almost six years in the Cardio-Thoracic Surgical Unit at Auckland City Hospital and over the last two years she has been doing casual district nursing working to deliver high quality care to patients in their own homes. Sonya currently works at the Auckland Sexual Health services at Auckland DHB.

Marion Guy says, "Sonya Temata is the executive secretary for the Cook Islands Nurses Association Aotearoa, the ADHB/WDHB Pacific Nurses Leaders Advisory Group, an NZNO delegate and a member of Te Rūnanga Māori Nurses Association, as well as holding many other leadership positions."

"Without nurses like Sonya our profession would be all the poorer. Thank you Sonya for your sterling and important mahi."
