Te Kāhui o Matariki Public Holiday Bill

NZNO welcomes your feedback on a bill which aims to establish an annual public holiday to acknowledge Matariki. The creation of this new public holiday reflects the Government’s commitment to recognising and celebrating an important aspect of te ao Māori. The bill itself describes the meaning and significance of Matariki to Māori.

The bill proposes that the new public holiday fall on a Friday in June or July of each year. The dates are set through to 2052, and a process is laid out for setting dates beyond that.

You can read the bill here.
