It is not mandatory for health professionals to report to Police if someone presents with an injury caused by a firearm.
The Government has agreed in principle to a recommendation of the Royal Commission of Inquiry into the terrorist attacks on Christchurch masjidain to introduce mandatory reporting of firearm injuries to Police by health professionals (Recommendation 24). The Government noted more work was required to determine how best to implement mandatory reporting.
Your feedback on the attached discussion paper will help determine how to respond to Recommendation 24. The paper has been developed by Police in conjunction with the Ministry of Health.
