Accepting the reality of a death is a fundamental part of the grieving process, but this can be complicated by the circumstances of the loss, cultural expectations, and individual beliefs and experiences, including spiritual and religious beliefs. Drawing on established and contemporary grief theories, including Worden’s Tasks of Mourning, this webinar explores the benefits and potential risks of different approaches to helping individuals and families acknowledge their loss.
Participants will consider challenging circumstances, including the death of a child, suicide, accidental and ambiguous deaths, and examine how sensitive communication, meaningful rituals, and other forms of support may assist the process. The webinar emphasises the importance of a thoughtful, individualised approach that respects each family’s needs and helps grieving people adapt to life after loss without imposing expectations about how grief should be experienced.
On completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:
-
Understand the importance of accepting the reality of loss within contemporary grief theory and bereavement practice.
-
Recognise the potential benefits and risks of different approaches to supporting acceptance of a death.
-
Describe how cultural, social, gender, individual, spiritual and religious differences influence grief responses and the process of adapting to loss.
-
Recognise situations that may make acceptance of a death more challenging, including the loss of a child, suicide, accidental deaths, and deaths where the circumstances or outcome remain uncertain.
-
Identify sensitive, practical approaches to helping individuals and families acknowledge their loss and adapt to life after bereavement.
