Disclosures of suicidal thoughts and self-harm can occur in a variety of professional settings, sometimes unexpectedly and in situations where there is little time to prepare. Responding effectively requires more than recognising warning signs. It involves creating a safe environment, remaining calm, asking direct and compassionate questions, assessing risk and identifying appropriate next steps.
This webinar combines current research, clinical experience, practical strategies and case examples to help participants build confidence in responding to suicide risk and self-harm. It will explore how to assess risk, recognise risk and protective factors, respond appropriately to disclosures, and work collaboratively to develop safety plans and determine when further support, consultation or referral is needed.
By the end of the webinar, participants will be able to:
- Identify warning signs associated with suicide risk and self-harm
- Respond appropriately and confidently to disclosures
- Ask direct and compassionate questions about suicide
- Conduct a structured risk assessment
- Recognise risk and protective factors
- Distinguish between acute and chronic risk
- Document concerns appropriately
- Understand when consultation and referral are required
