It is challenging to differentiate anxiety from other physical and mental health conditions in older people, particularly those with co-morbid dementia or depression. This article explores the role of nurses in identifying when an older person may be experiencing anxiety and then choosing the optimal non-pharmacological intervention to support them.

2. Exploring the use of music as an intervention for older people living in nursing homes

Helle Wijk., Merita Neziraj., Åsa Nilsson., & Eva Jakobsson Ung

Music interventions for older people with cognitive decline have been shown to have a positive effect on their mood and behaviour, particularly in terms of anxiety, agitation and irritability.

Aim To investigate the effect of musical interventions in nursing homes from the perspective of older people, their relatives and caregivers.

3. The psychological effects of caring for a family member with dementia

Bernie Reid  & Lauryn O’Brien
Nursing Older People. (2021, Nov). 33(6). 21-27. doi: 10.7748/nop.2021.e1295

This article reports the findings of an integrative review that explored the literature on the psychological effect of caring for a family member with dementia at home. The article discusses four themes that were identified in the literature: ‘the world shrinks’; ‘surrender to the unknown’; ‘robbed of the future’; and ‘torn between relief and guilt’

4. Frailty assessment and interventions for community-dwelling older adults: a rapid review

Shirin Vellani., Alexia Cumal., & Christine Degan

Jacqueline Thompson
Nursing Older People. (2021,Nov). 33(6), 13. doi: 10.7748/nop.33.6.13.s6

In July 2021 the Health and Care Bill was published, setting out legislative proposals to introduce integrated care boards and partnerships across England. For all four UK nations the delivery of these integration plans promises increased demand for nurses practising at an advanced level with their core skills of autonomous practice, clinical assessment, decision-making and person-centred care.

7. Support for menopause symptoms at work

Nursing Management. (2021, Dec). 28(6), 16-17. doi: 10.7748/nm.28.6.16.s6

Heavy periods, brain fog and hot flushes can all take their toll, but help should be available. With the average age of the menopause for women in the UK being 51, a significant proportion of nurses are likely affected. Yet workplace conditions and practices often don’t allow for the needs and symptoms of women during this stage.

8. Using transferable skills in your next nursing role

Nick Evans
Nursing Management. (2021, Dec). 28(6), 12-14. doi: 10.7748/nm.28.6.12.s4

Learn to identify and develop the skills you use day-to-day that can open up career options. There are a wide range of qualifications and training routes nurses can take, but there is also a set of skills that are common to almost all roles. Often overlooked, these transferable skills can make a huge difference to how you progress in your career and the opportunities that open up.

Erin Dean
Nursing Management. (2021, Dec.) 28(6), 9-11. doi: 10.7748/nm.28.6.9.s3

Change in nursing can be a challenge to introduce and maintain. Find out how to achieve the best results with maximum buy-in and minimum stress. When bullying, back-covering and defensiveness pervade the workplace culture, colleagues can turn on each other using NHS digital incident reporting systems. Could your eyebrows frighten people at work, or have you ever eaten chocolates meant for a colleague? If so, be warned – you could find yourself being ‘Datixed’.

Nursing Times, 13 December, 2021

Vaccine hesitancy, loosely defined as a reluctance or refusal to vaccinate, represents a continuum of views, with a significant proportion of those who are hesitant likely to accept immunisation if barriers to access are addressed and they receive appropriate information. This article reviews the evidence around vaccination hesitancy and how to increase vaccine uptake against the background of the Covid-19 pandemic.

12. Campaign to protect ‘nurse’ title continues as petition comes to close

Gemma Mitchell
Nursing Times, 15 December, 2021

The petition calling for protection of the ‘nurse’ job title in UK law has now officially closed with more than 33,000 signatures. It comes after MPs last month voted down a proposed amendment to the Health and Care Bill that would have achieved the goal and made ‘nurse’ a protected title.
