United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous issues

Intervention to the 16th session of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous issues, New York  on the following issues:

  • Retention and recruitment of Māori nurses is vital for the future health and wellbeing of our whānau, hapū and iwi. Action is required, to develop a Māori nursing workforce strategy with further investment, resourcing and vision to achieve this goal.
  • It is essential that global health and wellbeing must include indigenous voices at the highest decision making level of health.
  • We acknowledge that ILO 169 is an important document and support a resolution by this forum for ratification.
  • We also agree, that the UN develop an independent monitoring body for the implementation of the declaration

We support a representative group of the national Human Rights institutions be given a mandated seat and speaking rights at the New York United Nations
