The New Zealand Nurses Organisation made an application to PHARMAC to fund the hormonal intrauterine device (IUD) Mirena® for contraception. The Mirena is a type of long-acting, reversible contraception (LARC) using levonorgesterel, a progestin birth control hormone, and has addtional benefits in the treatment and prevention of heavy menstural bleeding and reducing the risk of endometrial cancer. Access to funded Mirena is currently highly restricted. NZNO suggests that funding Mirena for contraception would deliver substantial social, economic, and health benefits; ensure women had access to modern therapies; and would significantly reduce health disparities.
